For about a week, the veterinary unit of Nikaweratiya tried to treat the injured elephant “Manabharana” in the Kasikote, Gatadivula, and Palukadawala areas. But because of the elephant’s behavior, all their attempts failed.
This morning, the Nikaweratiya veterinary team together with wildlife officers from Galgamuwa formed several groups and searched the area. Luckily, Manabharana arrived with his herd, and at that moment officers were able to give him the tranquilizer injection.
Afterwards, within the Gatadivula reserve, Dr. Isuru examined the elephant and carried out treatment. Everyone waited anxiously until the treatment was completed.
The swelling on the elephant’s leg had already burst open before treatment, which may give him some relief while walking. Still, the situation will be monitored, and Dr. Isuru will treat him again if necessary.
We thank the villagers and wildlife officers who helped in searching for and assisting with the treatment of the elephant.
