Around 8:30 PM today, two elephants clashed between Galgamuwa and Ambanpola. During the incident, a calf got trapped in a train and died on the spot. The other elephant was not present at the location and traveled a significant distance with a herd, showing signs of distress. The herd often lingers around this area.
The last train-related elephant accident near Galgamuwa occurred in 2023. Two weeks ago, we reported that such a collision is highly likely due to trapped elephants, yet authorities took no action.
However, today alone, 5 elephants have reportedly died, according to confirmed reports.
