The body of a wild elephant that had been shot dead with a bullet to the head from a locally made firearm was found today in the Paluwaddana village, within the Higurakgoda Divisional Secretariat area.
The elephant, around 20 years old and about six and a half feet tall, had been roaming near the Kadudulla Sanctuary when it was killed.
At the time of the discovery, the owner of the land was not present, and officials are expected to summon him for questioning.
